National Book Award-winner Nathaniel Philbrick's newest book Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community and War tackles the story of the Pilgrims from their arrival in 1620 through King Philip's War. "I guess the traditional thing is to end the Pilgrims' story with the first Thanksgiving," Philbrick says. "But that rang false to me, not only because of what I knew about the Pilgrims but for what I knew about the country." Philbrick gives his version of the familiar stories of the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving, and writes of the complicated and difficult history of early America. He recounts in lucid prose the encounter between the English Colonists and the Native People who had been here for centuries.
