Butterfly Flower (Asclepias tuberosa) Type: Perennial. Where to Grow it: All regions. Bloom time and height: Summer 1 to 2 ft. Sun/Shade: Full sun. How to Grow it: Best in late Fall or early Spring. Prepare soil, cover seed to 1/16" depth, moisten lightly until rains fall. Seed will sprout in Spring. Butterfly flower will not thrive in heavy soils or wet conditions. It prefers gritty, dry areas. May take two years to bloom. Etc: Small, star-shaped, bright orange flowers create a spectacle of brilliance and make it a favorite of monarch butterflies. Native Americans used the fibers of this plant to make bowstrings. This showy perennial blooms June through September.
