First Name Bookmark (A-D)

$ 1.95

The front of the bookmark describes the origin of the first name.

The back of each bookmark reads:

The Birth of Given Names About 7 B.C.

Contrary to popular belief, most given names, or first names, preceded surnames by several generations. The need for an additional name became apparent when, in the 11th century, landowners recorded payment of fines by vassals and needed to distinguish one John from another.

As Christianity spread, the names of Bible characters and saints replaced those of ancient gods. In the 4th century, saints' names began to flourish, and within the development of the churches, baptismal names began.

Famous queens gave their name to their own daughters as well as to daughters of other lands. Each generation develops a different harvest of names, some enduring, while others fade away.
