A working solar timepiece. Colonial Americans often received miniature sundials with shipments of mechanical clocks ordered from European clockmakers. Thus the person receiving the shipment could set and start his clock according to the sun. This sundial is cast in weather-resistant solid zinc. The base measures 4 1/2 inches in diameter. The gnomon extends to a height of 2 1/2 inches.
