The book tells the story of Mayflower II's sea crossing as seen through the eyes of Felix. Felix was an actual kitten and member of Mayflower II's crew. As children read the tale of Felix' adventures and follow the accompanying illustrations, they learn not only about Felix and Mayflower II, but the basics of sailing and nautical terms.
