Thumb-Controlled Watering Pot

Thumb-Controlled Watering Pot

$ 45.00

Aptly described by John Worlidge in 1677, we leave it to him – “There is another sort of Watering pot that hath a small hole at the bottom and another at the Top, so that when you sink it into a Vessel of Water, it will fill by the lower pipe or hole, the air passing out at the hole at the top where the handle is also: when it is full take it by the handle and stop the hole with your thumb, and when you come to the Plant you intend to water, you may ease the hole whereon your thumb lies, and as you please let the water out at the Pipe in the bottom, and so may you stop it, and open it with your thumbs, at your pleasure. . .” Our pleasingly bulbous-shaped redware watering pot works just as above. The thumb hole is at the top of the handle and the bottom of the piece is stabbed full of holes to allow a gentle shower of water onto your plants. Large piece is approximately 7½” high with a diameter of approximately 5” at its widest point. Please allow for variations in glazing as these are handmade by a member of our Interpretative Artisans Program in the Crafts Center here at Plimoth Patuxet. A great gift for the gardener who has everything!

Great gift for a Plimoth lover

We gave this as a birthday gift to my Pilgrim-loving mom. Her delight and surprise was worth every dollar spent, and the brochures and gift wrap that I requested from the shop were the icing on the cake. Quick shipping, too.
