Birch bark extract is a time-honored Mi'kmaq skincare and beauty best-kept-secret fabled for its antibiotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-itch properties. Over 25 years ago, ethnobotanist, Maskwiomin co-founder and Mi'kmaq elder Tuma Young collected hundreds of medicinal plant stories and recipes in order to preserve Mi'kmaw knowledge that was in danger of being lost. In the Mi'kmaq tradition, making Maskwiomin is a labor-intensive process in which birch bark's medicinal properties are extracted by gently enveloping the bark within a specially-made campfire.
