As the European powers competed to gain economic advantage through the exploitation of overseas colonies, it became apparent that use of specific trade coinage would serve a second purpose by advertising the existence of the home nation.
This coin was made to compete with the Spanish Piece of Eight which was the most predominate coin across the globe. Many of these coins found their way into the American Colonies.
The obverse bears the shield of Holland with the inscription, "Insignia Hollandiae". On the reverse is the shield of the city of Amsterdam supported by the Lions of Netherlands with the inscription, "Amstelredamensis Et. Civitatis".
This replica coin is cast in lead-free pewter and then plated to match the original coin's appearance. Each coin comes packed with a header and a story on the back in a vinyl holder for easy display.
