Pig Money Box

Pig Money Box

$ 56.00

The original 'piggy banks' - these pig money boxes are handmade by a member of our Interpretative Artisans Program in the Crafts Center here at Plimoth Patuxet. Each is slightly different. Save your money in it if you like, but remember, there's no rubber stopper in the bottom of these money boxes! You've probably heard the expression "break the bank" and most people relate that to big winnings at a casino. A historian of our acquaintance informed us that the expression is much older than the late 19th-century popular song about the man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo. Historical rumor has it that the expression came from 16th and 17th century London theatres such as the Globe and the Rose. The coins paid for admission were put into small pottery banks and a packed house meant the bank was full to the top. These inexpensive clay banks had to be literally broken to get the money out; so a sold out show would 'break the bank'.

  • Measures approximately 8"x 3.5"x 3"
  • Made at Plimoth Patuxet Museums
