Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) Type: Perennial. Where to Grow it: All regions. Bloom time and height: Summer 1-2 ft. Sun/Shade: full sun to light shade. How to Grow it: Well-drained soil. Columbines do well in filtered sun under trees etc. Sow in early spring or fall. Sow on the surface, as the seed needs light to germinate. Will reseed themselves or cut back after bloom to encourage further growth. Etc: Amid the lofty ridges and sun-warmed hollows of the gentle wilderness called Massachusetts dwells one of the rarest of American wildflowers, the graceful Wild Red Columbine. This stunning perennial was latin-named "Columba", or dove, for its resemblance to the bird of peace.
